NISHIKI
Located on Morrison Street in Edinburgh, Nishiki is a contemporary Japanese restaurant and izakaya from the team behind Yamato. A refined and carefully curated interior shapes a relaxed, sociable dining experience, tailored to the client’s vision for a vibrant, flexible hospitality space.
Splintr led the full interior design and went on to deliver the complete fit-out, ensuring continuity from concept through to completion.
Drawing inspiration from the simplicity of materials and the meticulous detailing found in Japanese design, the space feels both authentic and contemporary—rooted in Japanese dining traditions yet distinctly connected to its Edinburgh setting.
A palette of natural timbers, textured finishes, and subtle contrasts creates warmth and depth without overwhelming the interior. Carefully detailed joinery anchors the scheme, establishing a consistent and considered design language. An ethos of restraint underpins the approach, where every element is considered and necessary, eliminating excess and reducing material consumption, while durable, responsibly sourced materials support the long-term performance of the space.
Lighting is used to alter the atmosphere across the day, balancing soft, intimate zones with brighter, more animated areas. This layered approach guides the transition from day to evening, reflecting the dynamic, evolving character of izakaya culture.
The previously disjointed property was transformed through a complete spatial reconfiguration. A new opening links the bar, entrance, and dining areas, creating clear sightlines and a cohesive flow. Where a thick, load-bearing stone wall once divided the space, a dramatic aperture now frames the communal table—a bold intervention that redefines the spatial experience and establishes a strong focal point within the restaurant.
