Cowan & SOns

In the heart of Raeburn Place lies 'Cowan & Sons' (formerly Maxi's) - a Stockbridge institution. The once fishmonger has been home to the local cafe for over 18 years and does a bustling breakfast and lunch trade seven days a week. When SPLINTR were approached to redesign the space, Maxis felt unfinished and lacked cohesion and flow. SPLINTR provided an initial design of the café which identified several different seating areas within the space establishing clear channels for foot traffic and creating a more welcoming and comfortable experience for its customers.

The distressed white and green tiles are the showstopper of this space and elude to the buildings history. We designed, fabricated and fitted bespoke, highly finished furniture which offered a sharp contrast to the deliberately shabby wall texture. Original lighting and an eclectic mix of found objects including a wall of colourful indian spice cabinets and an antique glass display case from the Fry's chocolate company were sourced to create interesting features at every turn and fill the space with pieces that have their own sense of history.
